In this Medically Speaking podcast, you will hear about ways to prevent and treat the most common voice problems. Our expert is Dr. Tanya Meyer, an ear, nose and throat physician who specializes in treating voice disorders at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

In this interview with Ellen Beth Levitt, she describes the various causes of vocal problems, including throat infections, anxiety and stress, lung or respiratory disorders, severe reflux, as well as growths, such as polyps (like calluses) on the vocal chords.

Many of Dr. Meyer’s patients use their voices professionally. She advises her patients to give their voice enough rest and drink plenty of water. And, she advocates having voice therapy with a voice therapist who can teach clients “vocal hygiene,” including changes in behavior and exercises to improve the voice. She says vocal nodules often go away after proper voice therapy. Dr. Meyer is also an assistant professor of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
