Nearly 107 million adults in the United States are estimated to have cholesterol levels that put them at risk for cardiovascular disease. In this Medically Speaking podcast, Dr. Robert Vogel explains why we should know our cholesterol numbers, and he describes the role of cholesterol-lowering medications (statins) in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. He also talks about the risk of side effects associated with statins.
In an interview with Bill Seiler, Dr. Vogel also describes how it is possible to reduce and control elevated cholesterol without medications. Dr. Vogel is a cardiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a professor of medicine and director of clinical vascular biology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
