Inflammatory bowel disease, also known as IBD, is a chronic, inflammatory condition of the intestines that affects nearly 1 million people in the United States. When people have IBD, their body's immune cells attack the intestinal lining and cause ulcerations and inflammation, which can produce gastrointestinal symptoms. IBD encompasses two disorders, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease. Both disorders affect young people, with the peak onset in the in the 20's and 30's, although they can affect children and older people.
In this interview with Bill Seiler, Raymond K. Cross, Jr., M.D., discusses the latest in diagnosis and treatment of IBD. Dr. Cross is a gastroenterologist and director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He is also an associate professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
