Overview: A growing number of people are having joint replacement surgery each year as Baby Boomers get older and develop problems with their aching knees, shoulders and hips. In this Medically Speaking podcast, Dr. Vincent D. Pellegrini, Jr., chief of orthopaedics at the University of Maryland Medical Center and professor and chairman of orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, explains who can be helped the most by joint replacement surgery, how the procedure is performed and what people can expect following surgery.
Dr. Pellegrini tells interviewer Karen Warmkessel that physical therapy and exercise play an important role in a patient's recovery because of the need to strengthen the muscles surrounding the new joint. And, he says, with advances in surgical techniques and pain medications, patients recover more quickly from joint replacement surgery than they did in the past.
