Overview: Warts are a very common problem. Most people have experienced one at some time. In this Medically Speaking podcast, Dr. Anthony A. Gaspari, chief of dermatology at the University of Maryland Medical Center and professor and chairman of dermatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, says warts are infections caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus.
There are many different kinds of warts, which require different treatments. In an interview with Karen Warmkessel, he says warts can be found on the hands, feet, genital area and other parts of the body. Some might go away on their own - or with the "tincture of time," as Dr. Gaspari puts it - but others might need to be removed by freezing or another method.
Dr. Gaspari says it's best not to treat warts with over-the-counter products
or home remedies but rather see a doctor to make sure that the bump is indeed
a wart and not something more serious.
