Overview:
Medical experts say that breast cancer is highly treatable if it is detected early. In this podcast, Dr. Shana Ntiri, medical director of the Baltimore City Cancer Program, talks about the importance of mammograms in detecting cancers before they spread.

Dr. Ntiri, an assistant professor of family and community medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, tells Karen Warmkessel that recent recommendations from a federal advisory panel have created uncertainty among women about when they should start having mammograms. Is it when they reach 40 or should they wait until they are 50, as the panel suggested? Dr. Ntiri urges women to speak with their doctor about their risk factors and when they should start getting annual mammograms. She adds that women should know their own bodies and be aware of any changes in their breasts.

The Baltimore City Cancer Program, which in part of the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, offers free mammograms and clinical breast exams to low-income, uninsured women in Baltimore.
