Overview: Totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass (TECAB) is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to perform coronary artery bypass grafting operation. This cutting-edge procedure, which is performed at few centers in the United States -- including the University of Maryland Medical Center -- is changing the landscape of bypass surgery. Shorter recovery times, less pain and less scarring, are just a few of the benefits of this procedure. This program features Dr. Johannes Bonatti, cardiac surgeon at UMMC and professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Barry Anderson, Dr. Bonatti's patient, also joins the program to share his experience with the TECAB procedure.

The program begins with Barry sharing his story. His two main arteries were 95 percent blocked and bypass surgery was critical. From what Barry had heard from friends, this was a rather unpleasant procedure with long-term pain and recovery. Barry did his research, found out about the TECAB procedure and connected with Dr. Bonatti at UMMC. You'll hear how Barry's doing now and how he feels about the care he received.

Dr. Bonatti does an excellent job of explaining the advantages of this endoscopic surgery, including the overall surgical trauma associated with heart surgery. He goes on to help listeners understand the advances that have been made in robotic surgery over the years. Dr. Bonatti also talks about which patients are candidates for this type of surgery. If you or a loved one are considering bypass surgery, it's worth your while to listen and learn more about this less invasive procedure.
