Resources for Moms

Maternal and Fetal Medicine (High-Risk Obstetrics)

While most pregnancies and births go smoothly, sometimes medical difficulties occur. The Maternal Fetal Medicine Division at University of Maryland Medical Center is internationally recognized for its expertise in fetal medicine and its high level of excellence in caring for both the fetus and mother. Our team of physicians brings more than 30 years of research experience and clinical success in comprehensive fetal testing and treatments, some of which are unique for our Division.

Labor and Delivery

Our labor and delivery suites are staffed by obstetric anesthesiologists 24 hours a day. You have several choices for anesthesia-assisted birth as well as the option of delivering without anesthesia.

You will give birth in a private labor room. At delivery your baby will be placed skin to skin, this helps your baby maintain their temperature and helps with bonding. After delivery, you and your baby will not be separated unless medically necessary. You will be moved to a private postpartum room where you will stay until you and baby are ready to leave the hospital. Following the birth, you and your baby can rest comfortably in your room. Routine tests, baths and exams are done in your room. No pacifiers will be given to your baby. It is recommended that breastfeeding be well established before giving babies pacifiers. Our staff members will help you and your family learn to care for your newborn and answer any of your questions. Learn more about our labor and delivery services.
