UMNursing is a partnership between the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) developed to strengthen both transition from student to professional nurse and the advancement of nurse professionals. 

Lisa Rowen, DNSc, RN, CENP, FAAN (Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer, University of Maryland Medical Center)

Lisa Rowen, DNSc, RN, CENP, FAAN, Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at the University of Maryland Medical Center since 2007, oversees 4600 nurses, advanced practice nurses and other health professionals. Before coming to UMMC, Dr. Rowen served as Director of Surgical Nursing at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she began her career as a surgical nurse, and CNO at Mercy Medical Center. A national leader in her profession, Dr. Rowen is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She has served as a journal editor and has published more than 65 articles on patient safety, teamwork and communication, health-related issues and best practice standards. As the principal investigator for an AONE funded study, Dr. Rowen studied and presents frequently on Leadership Development & Patient Outcomes. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing.

Jane Kirschling was appointed dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) and director of interprofessional education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in January 2013. She previously held administrative and faculty positions at the University of Kentucky, University of Southern Maine, University of Rochester, and Oregon Health & Science University. At the national level, Dean Kirschling served on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Board of Directors since 2004, including serving as president from 2012-2014.  Her clinical expertise is in mental health nursing with a focus on end-of-life care. In the past decade, however, she has focused on workforce development with an emphasis on rural states. Kirschling, an alumna of the AACN-Wharton Executive Leadership Fellows Program (2013) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Executive Fellows Program (2000-2003), was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2009.

Mr. Raymond is the Director of Nursing and Patient Care Services for Clinical Practice and Professional Development, Neurosciences, and Behavioral Health Services at the University of Maryland Medical Center.  In this role, Mr. Raymond is responsible for the strategic planning, operational management, quality of care/service delivery, and outcomes for these areas.  Prior to his role as director, Mr. Raymond held the position of Clinical Nurse Manager for the UMMC Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Maryland. 

Mr. Raymond is an appointed board member of the Maryland State Board of Nursing.  He holds a Faculty Associate appointment at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health.  Mr. Raymond is also Co-Chair for UMNursing, the Academic-Practice Partnership between the University of Maryland Medical Center and University of Maryland School of Nursing.

Mr. Raymond’s academic preparation includes a MS (’10) in Leadership and Management from the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Nursing where he also obtained his BSN (’05), and an MBA (’10) from the University of Baltimore Merrick School of Business.  He holds certificates in Teaching in Nursing and Health Care Professions from The University of Maryland and Nursing Leadership from The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.  Mr. Raymond is a member of the nursing honors society Sigma Theta Tau and a lifetime member of international business honor society Beta Gamma Sigma, and holds a professional membership in the American Organization of Nurse Executives, and Maryland Organization of Nurse Leaders.


Karen S. Kauffman, PhD, CRNP, RN, FAAN (Department Chair, University of Maryland School of Nursing)

Karen S. Kauffman, PhD, CRNP, RN, FAAN is Associate Professor and Department Chair of Family and Community Health at UMSON.  She holds ANCC board-certification as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner and has a long-term care consultation practice for older adults and their families in the community, most of whom are living with Alzheimer’s. Dr. Kauffman received her diploma from Geisinger Medical Center School of Nursing. Prior to advancing her education, she worked in acute and progressive coronary, surgical, and medical care units and in nursing administration. She earned her BSN from Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales, and her MS and PhD from University of Pennsylvania. She has expertise in qualitative research methodology and serves as a consultant or Co-PI on interdisciplinary and externally funded grants. Between 2008 and 2013, Dr. Kauffman served as the only nurse on the National Board of Directors of the Alzheimer’s Association, and currently serves on the Board of the Association’s Greater Maryland Chapter.
