Applying to the Residency Program

The University of Maryland, Baltimore is accepting applications for its Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgical Residency Training Program. This is a six-year program with opportunity to spend 1-2 additional years in basic or translational research or to pursue graduate degree in related or ancillary field (PPH, MBA, MS, or PhD). Applications are accepted through ERAS and open for submission on September 15 and the deadline for applications is November 30.

Arranging a Sub-Internship

We encourage interested 4th year medical students to take advantage of the opportunity to rotate as a sub-intern on either the Cardiac or Thoracic Surgical Services. This will be an evaluable opportunity to gain firsthand experience into the strengths of our training program.

  • For U.S. Medical Students:
    • Registration for a sub-internship is processed through VSAS. This site and other information about the application process can be accessed through the UMSOM website.
    • Please note, it is extremely important to list your preference for a rotation in either cardiac or thoracic surgery via the sub-specialty option under Surgery.
  • For students at foreign medical schools, please contact Carla Fernandez at cfernandez@som.umaryland.edu, for details and assistance in setting up a sub-internship.
