The residency program of the Department of Neurology of the University of Maryland provides a superb, ACGME approved, educational experience for our eighteen neurology trainees. Our faculty of 42 physicians and 13 Ph.D.'s are devoted teachers, clinicians, and researchers. Together with colleagues in neurosurgery, neuroradiology, psychiatry, and many other disciplines, they represent a wide breadth of expertise available to the neurology resident.
The University of Maryland Medical Center is a large tertiary care center, with a broad network of referring community hospitals throughout the region. As a consequence, on the inpatient services neurology residents have exposure to common neurology diagnoses, as well as patients with more complex or rare conditions who are transferred for a higher level of care. Among the many services offered are an active Neuroscience ICU, Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, and state of the art Neuroradiology suites for interventional management of acute stroke.
Similarly, in the outpatient center, patients come for treatment of a broad range of disorders, including patients referred from community neurologists to our specialists for second opinions. Our residents also receive training at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, which is connected to the University hospital by a foot bridge. Residents also rotate at the Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedics institute (formerly Kernan Hospital), a specialized rehabilitation center with dedicated stroke and neurotrauma units. With all of these resources available, our neurology residents receive a broad inpatient and outpatient clinical neurology experience.
There are many educational opportunities, including grand rounds, Chairman's rounds, case conferences, daily morning report, specialty conferences, and a curriculum of didactic mid-day lectures throughout the year. The faculty is involved in a wide array of research activities, from basic science laboratory programs to clinical trials. There are abundant opportunities for residents to pursue research questions, either of their own design or in conjunction with on-going projects.
Our program is designed to provide increasing responsibility and independence as trainees become more experienced, while always maintaining support from more senior residents, fellows, and attending physicians. By the end of the residency, our trainees are well prepared to succeed in any of the many career options available to neurologists today. Our residents have been very successful in going on to fellowships and careers in many different fields.

From the Chief Residents:
Welcome to our website for the Neurology Residency Training Program of the University of Maryland. The goal of our site is to share our perspective of the program as current residents. We hope that your tour of our website will interest you in learning more about the program in person.
During our residency, we rotate through the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Shock Trauma Center (STC,) University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute (UMROI, formerly known as Kernan Hospital) and the Baltimore VA Medical Center. All of these buildings are all connected without ever needing to go outdoors with the exception of UMROI (only a 20min drive), and the University of Maryland’s Neurology Ambulatory clinic, which is only two blocks away from the Medical Center. The STC is the nation's only integrated trauma hospital with the largest volume of trauma patients per year. UMROI is one of the largest and most advanced rehabilitation hospitals in the country, and is where most of our neurological patients go for acute rehab. In addition, we are a referral center from all across Maryland and the surrounding states, and the primary trauma center in our region. Clinical rotations through all these centers offer us a well-rounded and complete experience of Neurology in a multitude of settings. We are exposed to a unique clinical training while caring for patients with complicated neurological problems.
Graduates from the University of Maryland have a reputation for providing excellent patient care and being superior clinicians. We attribute this reputation to the many outstanding teachers on our faculty. In addition to their strong investment in our education, our faculty provide extensive opportunities for both clinical and basic science research, along with quality improvement/patient safety (QIPS) projects. Each resident has a personal advisor for our project/research who is invested in helping us grow as clinician investigators. These projects are usually presented both at the AAN Annual Meeting along with a yearly resident/fellows research project grand rounds.
At the University of Maryland, we are actively involved in shaping the program. This stems from having Dr. Carolyn Cronin as a dedicated program director who continually strives for improvement in us and the program. Dr. Cronin, along with the rest of the faculty, actively seek our input/ideas with monthly department and program meetings where the residents participate.
Our residents come from a variety of backgrounds and have equally varying interests and professional goals. Historically, the vast majority of us complete her/his training with a subspecialty fellowship prior to pursuing careers in academics or private practice. We are fortunate to have a number of well-known sub-specialty divisions and associated ACGME accredited fellowship opportunities. These include Neurovascular, Neurophysiology (both EEG and EMG tracks), Movement Disorders, Neurotrauma/critical care, and Multiple Sclerosis. These strong divisions and expert faculty provide a terrific level of education/ mentorship. This is the reason why most residents have had their first choice of fellowships (whether that is staying on at University of Maryland or elsewhere), and some residents have stayed on as faculty here as well. When pursuing other programs or positions in the community, our applications have always been well respected given the strong reputation of our program.
Baltimore and the surrounding region provides a myriad of extracurricular activities, with many excellent restaurants, sporting venues, and cultural events to choose from. The beaches of the mid-Atlantic region and the Appalachian Mountains are only a few hours away, offering easy access for weekend getaways and activities for all times of the year (we get a nice exposure to all four seasons here.) The city and surrounding suburbs have many beautiful and safe neighborhoods, and our residents have chosen a variety of different places to live that suit their own tastes (about 50-50 spilt between residents living in the city vs the surrounding suburbs.) Maryland public schools are among the best public schools in the US for those with children or who may look to settle in the area after residency. The Baltimore-Washington, DC metropolitan area provides excellent access to many job opportunities for graduating residents and their significant others.
