Our ACGME-accredited fellowship provides the ideal combination of exposure to a high volume of complex orthopaedic traumatic injuries in a setting which encourages independence and autonomy but with direct supervision and attending support always readily available.

Fellowship Rotations and Schedule:

R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center: Designated as the highest acuity tertiary trauma center for the state of Maryland, shock trauma provides a unique educational experience of complex orthopaedic trauma for our fellowship. Shock trauma has approximately 8,000 primary trauma admissions annually, 40% of which arrive by air and 60% by ground. Our orthopaedic group performs 4,000 trips to the operating room a year, a high percentage of these for polytrauma cases. Fellows have a busy operative experience with a heavy emphasis on difficult high-energy cases. Fellows will spend approximately 7 months on rotation at this location with three of our annual five trauma fellows on rotation here at a time.

University of Maryland Midtown Medical Center: Located 5 minutes north of Shock Trauma, Midtown Hospital is where the majority of our fracture-related elective surgery, malunions, nonunions, and cold trauma surgery is performed. There are one to two ortho trauma faculty operating at this location every day. Fellows will spend two six-week rotations at this location.

University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center: This site is a busy level 2 trauma center located between Baltimore and Washington, DC. Fellows will spend two six-week rotations here as the sole fellow working with our orthopaedic trauma faculty. Fellows can expect a varied case mix with a combination of higher energy and geriatric trauma of the upper and lower extremities.
