Visiting students interested in pursuing electives at the University of Maryland School of Medicine must apply through the Office of Student Affairs (OSA). All students must be in good academic standing and must be fourth-year medical students before starting their electives.   • Trauma Surgery

    An outstanding elective that provides an opportunity to apply basic physiopathology to the injured patients.
  • Sub-Internship in Shock Trauma Intensive Care

    In this clinical sub-internship, the student will be a working member of the team in the trauma and neurological ICUs at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. 
  • Sub-Internship in Shock Trauma Surgery

    In this clinical elective, the student will be expected to gain a basic knowledge of the priorities of trauma resuscitation, diagnosis, acute care and an understanding of post-acute care.

  • Soft Tissue Surgery

    The student will be responsible for admitting and rendering care to patients with soft tissue infections as well as care for the patient in the operating room (under the guidance of an attending surgeon/surgical fellow).
  • Sub-Internship in Cardiac Surgery Critical Care

    The senior medical student will serve as essential team members on the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CS-ICU) at University of Maryland where they will be exposed to open heart surgery patients, heart and lung transplant patients, patients with heart assist devices and patient undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
