Educational Programs at Shock Trauma's Center for Injury Prevention

At the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, we tailor our educational programs to your group of students. Our programs, hosted either on-site at Shock Trauma or at your home location, cover topics such as traumatic injury prevention, safe decision-making, violence prevention and career exploration.

Educational Programs Options
Choose from several options to fit your group's needs and interests. Visiting student groups can tour Shock Trauma, practice skills in our medical simulation area, participate in interactive lectures and more.
For a more comprehensive experience, we recommend selecting at least two of the following options:
Stop the Bleed training | 60 minutes
Participants will learn three quick actions that can save the life of someone suffering from rapid blood loss.
Walking tour of Shock Trauma | 30–45 minutes
Participants witness firsthand one of the highest-volume trauma centers in the nation and what it's like to be one of the 6,500 severely injured and critically ill people who come through the Shock Trauma Center every year.
- Participants must be at least 16 years old. On-site only.
Virtual tour of Shock Trauma | 10 minutes
Participants see the Shock Trauma Center from the inside while learning about its history, vision and mission.
- This can be used instead of or as a supplement to the walking tour.
Narcan training | 45 minutes
Participants learn how to prevent a fatal opioid overdose with the proper tools and training.
Teen violence prevention lecture | 30–45 minutes
Participants learn about the life-altering consequences of violence-related injuries and understand what it takes to break the cycle of violence.
Teen safe driving lecture by ThinkFirst | 45–60 minutes
Participants get the facts, hear the stories and commit to driving safely.
Concussion and brain injury prevention lecture by ThinkFirst | 30–45 minutes
Participants learn why preventing concussions, recognizing symptoms, seeking medical care and following concussion guidelines are vital in preventing the long-lasting effects of concussion.
Hands-on simulation lab | 45–60 minutes
Trainees and students alike practice the skills necessary for emergency and trauma care using state-of-the-art simulation software.
- This is a high-demand activity and subject to availability. On-site only.
Organ donor and transplant lecture by Infinite Legacy | 45–60 minutes
Participants learn the importance and generosity of organ, eye and tissue donation.
Visit from a trauma survivor | 10–20 minutes
We will do our best to match your group with an inspiring Shock Trauma survivor whose words are sure to leave a mark.
- This is a high-demand activity and subject to availability.

Planning Your Educational Program
We host our research-based educational programs throughout the year. For groups arriving on-site at Shock Trauma, start times are no earlier than 8 am, and visits end no later than 2 pm.
For groups staying at their home location, start and end times can be more flexible.
The maximum number of students allowed in a single-day, on-site visit is 24. We require one chaperone for every 10 students and can accommodate larger groups across multiple days.
After filling out the above request form, we will contact you to coordinate your experience and provide you and your group with everything you need. We cover the costs for everything except meals and transport.
The Shock Trauma Center can positively shift the perspectives of adolescents, whether they are considering a career in medicine or engaging in risky behavior. We hope that after participants see and hear what happens at Shock Trauma, students will leave focused on what's right for them.
