Recruitment for Clinical Studies

Volunteer for a research study that compares the immune system of smokers and non-smokers

The Department of Pulmonary/Critical Care is initiating a study comparing the immune systems of smokers to non-smokers.

To be eligible, you must be between the ages 21-55 years old. In addition, you must either be a life-long non-smoker or actively be smoking 1 pack per day for 5 or more years. Compensation would be $180 and expenses.

Volunteers would undergo:

  1. Short 15 minute visit to perform pulmonary function tests (blow into a tube) and talk about their medical history.

  2. Bronchoscopy with simple BAL (insertion of fiberoptic camera into lungs and washing fluid)

  3. Insertion of peripheral intravenous for procedure with removal of 100cc of blood.

Do you have a nagging cough due to smoking?

If so, you may have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (a smoking related lung disorder). We are looking for people with COPD to participate in clinical trials which evaluate new treatments.

We're working for better asthma treatments.

Our clinic is conducting a clinical research study for teenagers and adults who have asthma. This study is testing the effectiveness or two marketed medications for the treatment of asthma.

You may be able to participate if you are at least 12 years of age and have a history of asthma. Study staff will review additional criteria with you.

You will be asked to come to the clinic for 11 study visits over approximately 9 months. All study-related medical evaluations and study medications are provided to qualified participants at no cost.
