Pneumonia Care: Blood Cultures Before Initial Antibiotic

Before a patient receives any antibiotics for pneumonia, it is important that blood samples be taken to test for the type of infection. Knowing the type of infection a patient has can help doctors better determine which medications will work best to treat the illness.

The chart below shows the percentage of UMMC pneumonia patients whose blood cultures were performed before they were administered their first dose of antibiotics as compared to the national average.
