A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of a woman's uterus. This procedure may be recommended for patients with uterine fibroids, GYN cancer, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, adenomyosis, and other conditions known to cause chronic pelvic pain.
In the past, this surgery required a large incision in the patient's abdomen, which often resulted in a long, painful recovery that caused significant scarring and abdominal weakness. Minimally invasive approaches now allow surgeons to perform hysterectomies with small incisions and less scarring and pain for the patient.
The newest of these surgical innovations is robot-assisted hysterectomies, which are now becoming the preferred alternative to open surgery.
