Shock Trauma STAT Lab

Manager: Louise Larson

Since Shock Trauma's inception as an experimental 2 bed post cardiac surgery unit there has been a STAT lab dedicated to providing immediate turn-around of specimens to aid in the evaluation and treatment of critically injured patients. Having a dedicated Stat lab has been deemed so important to a trauma center that it is required to obtain the PARC designation (primary adult resource center).

The Stat lab maintains its ability to provide the turn-around-times needed by performing a limited menu of tests, namely blood gases, CBC, coagulation testing, and limited chemistries. The main Laboratories of Pathology provide other testing and blood bank services.

Medical Technology is a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree with a tested registry. The staff of the STC Stat lab handles all parts of the testing process from receiving and accessioning the blood work to follow-up with the floors when results are abnormal.

Being part of the Shock Trauma team means there is closer interactions with the caregivers than the majority of laboratory settings. We are all here for the same reason, to provide the best possible care for our patients.
