Ophthalmic Services Within Shock Trauma

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences provides 24-hour quality care for patients who sustain severe eye trauma. In addition, the Ophthalmology Service treats patients who need ongoing care to achieve not only the best possible visual outcome but also outstanding functional and cosmetic outcomes for the eye and its surrounding structures. Our Service includes subspecialists who are known both nationally and internationally for their expertise and research in their respective areas of concentration.

The Ophthalmology Service evaluates and treats patients with the most severe types of injuries, such as those seen after motor vehicle accidents and industrial accidents. Every effort is made to salvage the patient's vision, which often requires advanced microsurgical techniques and the latest technology. In those cases in which the eye is severely damaged, every effort is made to maximally rehabilitate the patient from both functional and psychological perspectives.

The Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Division within the Department of Ophthalmology, headed by Dr. Sajeeve S. Kathuria, also takes care of patients who have sustained additional injury to the adnexal structures of the eye, such as the tear duct, the eye lids and the bones of the eye socket. Dr. Kathuria specializes in the acute management and the reconstructive aspects of trauma affecting these vital structures of the orbit and periorbital region.
