EMS Educational Programs

The Shock Trauma Center offers a host of educational programs for EMS professionals. The programs we offer are listed below. Click on any of the links for more information.

Observation Programs at Shock Trauma

Do you ever wonder what happens after your patient arrives at the Shock Trauma Center?

The Shock Trauma Center is dedicated to the education of the prehospital providers of our state. Our office offers clinical observation experiences in the Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU), Neurotrauma Critical Care Unit, and the Multiple Trauma Critical Care Unit. These programs are designed for observational purposes only and restricted to MD EMS Providers.

Rotations in the TRU are available Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. or 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Rotation in the Multiple Trauma and Neurotrauma Units are available Wednesday and Friday, 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Advanced Airway Lab

Do you have a favorite blade? Do you always intubate the same way? When was the last time you asked yourself is there a new way of thinking? Are you interested in sharpening your airway management skills? We would like to challenge your paradigms and help you develop a new airway mentality.

The EMS Office offers and advanced airway program twelve times a year. Class size is limited to 16 ALS providers per class. The class is taught by the staff of the Shock Trauma Center, Maryland State Police and EMS Educators from around the state. Pre-registrations are required. The class will consist of online pre-course reviews, on site lectures on Airway A&P, RSI, Advanced Airways, Surgical Airways, followed by a practical lab session in the cadaver lab. (CEUs offered)

Tours

Are you teaching an EMS certification class? Do you lead a group in your fire department? Would your students or department be interested in learning more about the Maryland EMS System and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center?

Group tours for Maryland EMS organizations and classes may be arranged through the EMS Office at any time. Tours should be booked at least one month in advance and are done in coordination with other events and programs of the EMS Office. Contact the EMS Office for more information.

Please note that all tour groups will be limited to 15 participants. Larger groups wishing to tour the Shock Trauma Center will need to schedule additional times and or dates to accommodate the group size.

Evening Educational Programs at Shock Trauma

Do you want to stay on the cutting edge of trauma medicine? Are you interested in learning where trauma medicine and EMS will be in the future?

These presentations at the Shock Trauma Center are open to all Maryland prehospital providers as well as nurses. The lectures are in format to allow the providers to draw direct correlation between knowledge and application as it relates to trauma patients. We webcast these presentations to multiple remote sites currently including Calvert County ALS, Cecil County DES, Cumberland Memorial, MFRI-Midshore, Prince Georges Co Fire Services Building, PRMC, St. Mary’s Hospital, Shore Health, Suburban Hospital, and Washington Co. Hospital Center. Please check with remote sites for individual participation. (MIEMSS CEUs offered)

State EMS Conferences

Come experience EMS Conferences around the state. Great times and great education.
