About the city of Baltimore

Baltimore is a city of roughly 600,000 that boasts many of the advantages of an eastern seaboard city without the overwhelming size of its neighbors on the east coast. The coastal location makes the weather relatively temperate with winters averaging 18 inches of snowfall (the average number of snowy days is 10; the average high in February is 45°F and the average low is 29°F). Our fellows are typically split amongst those with and without children and the city is well suited to either situation. There is a vibrant nightlife and social scene, an outstanding and eclectic collection of dining experiences and a strong network of family support. Urban living that maintains a small-town feel typifies the Baltimore experience and many young professionals as well as families with young children reside within the city.

The city has many outstanding attractions including the Inner Harbor and easy access to the Chesapeake Bay, the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center and the newly developed Harbor East retail, dining and entertainment area which are all within walking distance of the hospital. The Baltimore Orioles baseball team plays home games at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, one of the nation's premier ball parks a block from STC. Baltimore Ravens home games are played at M&T Bank Stadium just down the street. Other nearby attractions include the Babe Ruth Museum, the Visionary Arts Museum, the Walters Art Gallery, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and Fort McHenry where Francis Scott Key first penned the national anthem, all of which are easily accessible from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

The newly completed Student Center directly across the street from the hospital includes excellent dining alternatives to the hospital cafeteria as well as a state-of-the-art gym and indoor pool. Membership to this facility is provided to incoming fellows for the year at the division's expense. The waterfront promenade which extends from the nearby Federal Hill neighborhood, through the Inner Harbor, Fell's Point and Canton waterfront neighborhoods is a popular running route. Other nearby venues for outdoor activities including running, road and mountain biking and roller blading include Loch Raven reservoir to the north and Patapsco State Park to the south.

Baltimore's thriving restaurant scene is concentrated primarily in the downtown neighborhoods of Federal Hill, Mt. Vernon, Fell's Point and Canton but also within reach are the culinary and cultural centers of Washington D.C. (39 miles away), Philadelphia (102 miles away), and New York City (192 miles away) all easily accessible by either car or train.
