Our three compartment hyperbaric chamber is the only hospital-based chamber in Maryland that can accommodate more than one person at a time.

Leaders in Hyperbaric Medicine

The University of Maryland Medical Center was a pioneer when, in 1965, it founded the Department of Hyperbaric Medicine at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. The department developed into one of the premier hyperbaric facilities in the United States. Today it offers treatment for air or gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, chronic osteomyelitis, radiation tissue damage and necrotizing soft-tissue infections.

The hyperbaric treatment chamber is now available for use by physicians in private practice and their patients. It is the only hyperbaric chamber in Maryland that can accommodate more than one patient at a time.

The Hyperbaric Medicine Department is an integral division of the University of Maryland's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Members of the department have played a key role in the development of the multi-disciplinary soft-tissue service, which includes specialists in surgery, infectious disease, pain management and hyperbaric medicine.

Because of the team's extensive experience we are prepared to manage the most complex and critical patients, even those suffering from necrotizing soft tissue infections and multi-organ system failure. The unique design of our multi-place hyperbaric chamber allows us to administer hands on critical care during the entire hyperbaric treatment, a service not available anywhere else in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.

We are never too busy, however, to provide individual attention to all of our patients. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide critical care to our sickest, with compassionate care for all.
