A Physician's Guide to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The Patient Experience

During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the patient breathes pressurized 100 percent oxygen intermittently mixed with pressurized room air. The therapy is administered in a hyperbaric chamber. A multi-place chamber, like the one used at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, is big enough to accommodate 10 or more patients as well as clinicians, support personnel, and medical equipment. Compressed air pressurizes the chamber, while the patients breathe pure oxygen via a head tent or endotracheal tube.
