The Patient Care Services education program provides formal and informal training to Shock Trauma nursing staff, undergraduate and graduate nursing students and observers from across the United States and abroad. A 40 hour Trauma Theory Course is offered 3 times a year to all new nursing staff including half-day trauma skills workshop.
Each fall the Education Council sponsors an 8-hour program, Special Topics in Trauma. This program is for nurses and other health professionals in the state.
Each year a mandatory competency marathon is held for all nursing staff to validate competence in specific trauma nursing skills.
Additional education programs are conducted on a unit level based on quality data and needs assessment. In general every unit has a minimum of 4 hours of planned education. The center participates with a number of academic nursing programs to provide varying degrees of graduate and undergraduate clinical experience.
Additional precepted experiences, from several days to six weeks, are provided to nurses and other allied health professionals. Nurses from around the world continue to visit and observe clinical activity and have participated in conferences sponsored by the Shock Trauma Center.
