Shock Trauma's Orthopaedic Trauma Service provides expert care for patients with severe musculoskeletal injuries and related complications. The service is a regional resource for physicians challenged by complex orthopaedic cases. In 1995, the Orthopaedic Trauma Service treated or provided consultation for more than 1,700 of the 5,322 patients admitted to Shock Trauma.

Patients requiring post-acute services can be followed by referring physicians, Shock Trauma faculty, or other specialists in the University Rehabilitation Network.
Offering one of the nation's few fellowships in orthopaedic trauma, Shock Trauma is the principal training site for a number of civilian and military orthopaedic surgery residency programs in Maryland: The University of Maryland, The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, The Union Memorial Hospital, The Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Bethesda Naval Medical Center as well as selected programs in other states and Great Britain.
Research activities of the Orthopaedic Trauma faculty include investigations in the areas of biomechanics of car crashes, rehabilitation following lower extremity injury, and strategies in limb salvage.
Specialists at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center are available for consultation and patient referral 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
