Shock Trauma provides full-time diagnostic imaging service for Radiography, Computed Tomography, Angiography and Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. There is a four person full-time radiology staff with special training in trauma and emergency imaging. A trauma radiology fellow and one or more residents also provide service.

Diagnostic imaging equipment includes a state-of-the-art 16-detector row CT and a second 4-detector row CT scanner. These devices offer vastly improved speed and image quality over prior CT machines and extend the capability of CT to scan the entire body in under one minute. Also, these newer devices can perform imaging of vessels (CT-angiography) and in many cases eliminate the need for more invasive and expensive intra-arterial catheter procedures. After the patient is removed from the CT scanner, three-dimensional surface contour and four-dimensional total volume images can be computer generated to best depict injuries.

Annually, over 62,000 radiologic studies of various body regions are performed in the trauma center, accounting for about one-third of all imaging studies performed in the radiology department at the University of Maryland. About one-half of all CT scans performed in the radiology department are done in the trauma center.
