Sleep Disorders Center

Physicians and Staff

The University of Maryland Sleep Disorders Center treatment team features specialists from a broad range of medical disciplines, which includes the areas of pulmonary diseases, otolaryngology, psychiatry, dentistry, and pediatric and adult neurology.

They work together to provide the best possible care for patients. Below is information on some of the principal team members, all of whom are on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine.


Steven M. Scharf, M.D. Ph.D.

Dr. Scharf is the medical director of the University of Maryland Sleep Disorders Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and sleep medicine and is a professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is responsible for the overall management of the Center, the sleep laboratory and the clinical policies. He is a nationally recognized expert in breathing problems at night.


Allan Krumholz, M.D.

Dr. Krumholz is the associate medical director of the University of Maryland Sleep Disorders Center. He is board certified in neurology and epilepsy, is a professor of neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is the director of the Maryland Epilepsy Center. He is responsible for overseeing the neurological care of patients with sleep disorders. He is a nationally recognized epilepsy expert.


Linda Berg-Cross Ph.D.

Dr. Berg-Cross is a licensed, board certified clinical psychologist and a faculty member of the University of Maryland Medical School. She focuses on behavioral sleep medicine, including the non drug treatment of insomnia in a number of sleep disorders and family life cycle sleep dysfunctions.


John Brown, M.D.

Dr Brown is a pulmonary/critical care specialist with expertise in treating all aspects of sleep disorders. He recently joined our faculty from Tampa, FL. He will participating in our clinical and research efforts in a variety of sleep disorders.


Montserrat Diaz-Abad, M.D.

Dr. Diaz is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is Co-Director of the Maryland ALS Clinic and has particular interest in sleep disordered breathing, effect of neuromuscular disorders on sleep, and noninvasive ventilation. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, and board eligible in Sleep Medicine. She is bilingual in Spanish and English.


Ana Lasso-Pirot, M.D.

Dr. Ana Lasso-Pirot: Dr. Pirot is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland. She is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Lung Diseases. She sees children with disordered breathing at night, including sleep apnea.


Maria Cecelia Melendres, M.D.

Dr. Melendres is board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Lung Disease, and board-eligible in sleep medicine. She received her sleep medicine training at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. She is director of the pediatric sleep clinic and section director of the pediatric sleep laboratory. She sees children with a variety of sleep problems.


Jeanne-Geiger Brown, Ph.D., R.N.

Dr. Geiger Brown is a sleep researcher with an interest in sleep and sleep deprivation in nursing personnel. She also participates in our clinical program. With a background as a psychiatric nurse specialist she has developed a clinic devoted to cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with insomnia. This clinic specializes in non-drug treatment of insomnia as a symptom in a number of sleep disorders.


Jeffrey Hasday, M.D.

Dr. Hasday is the director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary diseases and is a professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has expertise in breathing problems at night.


Janet Lam, M.D.

Dr. Lam is a board-certified pediatrician and neurologist. She works in all aspects of sleep disorders, with a special interest in neurological disturbances and sleep disorders in children.


Suzanne Lesage, M.D.

Dr. Lesage is a board-certified neurologist and sleep specialist who has recently joined the faculty of our sleep center. In addition to the treatment of all facets of sleep medicine, she has a special interest and expertise in the treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome, a common and distressing neurological condition.


Kathleen Sarmiento, M.D.

Dr. Sarmiento is a pulmonary/critical care specialist who has recently joined our faculty and the sleep center staff after having completed a fellowship in sleep medicine at the University of Maryland. She has an interest in sleep apnea developing during pregnancy. In addition to seeing patients in the sleep medicine practice, she has established a liaison with the Dept of obstetrics and gynecology to enable rapid evaluations of pregnant women who are showing signs of sleep disordered breathing.


Rodney Taylor, M.D.

Dr. Taylor is a member of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) at the University of Maryland Medical Center and is board certified in this field. He is also an associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has expertise in the surgical treatment of sleep apnea and swallowing disorders at night.


Avelino C. Verceles, M.D.

Dr. Verceles is a member of Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary diseases, and maintains board eligibility in the specialty of sleep medicine. Dr. Verceles is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and has expertise in breathing problems at night.


Jeffrey Wolf, M.D.

Dr. Wolf is a member of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He is board certified in this field and is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has expertise in the surgical treatment of sleep apnea.


Janet Hansen R.N., M.S.N., C.R.N.P.

Ms. Hanson is a nurse practitioner specializing in sleep disorders. She is skilled in the management of a variety of sleep disorders, and is an integral part of the center. Her specialized interests are compliance with treatment for sleep apnea, and the treatment of insomnia.
