The orthopaedic spine service at the University of Maryland offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art evaluation and non-surgical and surgical treatment of all spinal disorders. Faculty members limit their practice to spinal disorders. With the diversity of experience and expertise afforded by our faculty, all regions of the spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbosacral) are covered.

Furthermore, as part of an academic medical center, our physicians are all on the University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty. They have extensive experience in the treatment of spinal degenerative disease (such as lumbar spinal stenosis) and traumatic disorders and deformity (scoliosis, kyphosis). We are also using minimally invasive techniques, such as a new spinal fusion technique to treat a variety of conditions, including veretebral compression fractures. We're also using the first spinal disc replacement approved by the FDA to treat patients with degenerative disc disease. These techniques tend to shorten the time patients spend in the hospital and speed recovery time as well.

In addition to the full spectrum of traditional surgical techniques, in appropriate cases, we also offer video assisted thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery and are positioned at the forefront of evolving spinal instrumentation systems. Adult patients are evaluated at the University of Maryland Medical Center and pediatric scoliosis cases are typically seen at the Kernan Hospital scoliosis clinic.
