University of Maryland Spine Program

Spinal Pain Management

Despite surgical advances and promising non-invasive procedures, some patients are unable to find complete relief from all of their spinal pain. That is why we work closely with the University of Maryland Pain Management Center. Under the direction of Joel Kent, M.D., assistant professor of anesthesiology at the UM School of Medicine, the Pain Management Center offers a variety of therapies and resources to improve the quality of our patientsÂ’ lives.

The Pain Management Center uses a multi-disciplinary model to treat the whole patient. Center staff collaborate with psychologists, physical therapists, nurses, neurologists, radiologists and other specialists throughout the University of Maryland Medical System to make sure that patients get all of the help they need to effectively manage their pain. They also employ complementary techniques such as acupuncture and biofeedback to promote healing and relief.

Patients may be referred for an initial consultation, which includes a thorough evaluation, generally lasting an hour, and is designed to help the team develop a highly individualized and effective treatment plan. Depending on each individual case, patients may be seen for a one-time consultation only, with our recommendations sent back to the referring physician, or the plan may consist of medical management, physical therapy and/or psychology services as well as interventional procedures such as nerve blocks.

Sometimes patients are referred specifically for diagnostic procedures alone, without a full evaluation, to help us to determine the exact location of the pain. Patients may be referred for interventional pain management techniques and/or diagnostic procedures, such as epidural steroid injections, sympathetic blocks, selective nerve root blocks, facet blocks, discograms, spinal cord stimulation and the implantation of pain medication pumps.
