Dr. Daniel Gelb, an orthopaedic surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center who specializes in treating spine disorders, discusses spinal stenosis – a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on nerves in the back. Between 250,000 and 500,000 Americans over age 50 have this condition and experience symptoms such as pain, numbness and weakness in the legs as well as difficulty in walking.
Speaking with Karen Warmkessel, Dr. Gelb, co-director of the University
of Maryland Spine Center and associate professor of orthopaedics at the
University of Maryland School of Medicine, explains that spinal stenosis
is most commonly caused by deterioration of spine as we age. He describes
a range of treatments, including a surgical procedure called a laminectomy
in which bone is removed from the spinal canal to relieve the pressure on
the nerves.
Back pain is one of the most common health problems in the United States, with eight out of 10 Americans experiencing an aching back at some point in their lives.
