Dr. Richard Battafarano comes to the University of Maryland in 2007 from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he was assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
He received his medical degree from the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Minnesota, a cardiothoracic surgery residency at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and a surgical infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Minnesota, where he also earned a Ph.D., in biomedical sciences.
He is the chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and an associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is also a member of the Thoracic Oncology Program at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center.
Dr. Battafarano's areas of special interest include lung cancer surgery, esophageal cancer surgery, Barrett's esophagus, mediastinal tumors, metastatic cancer to the lung and surgery for other tumors of the chest.

Dr. Whitney Burrows received his medical degree from New York University Medical School. He completed his surgical residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Upon completion of his fellowship at Barnes Hospital-Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Burrows spent a year at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, advancing his training in general thoracic surgery.
He holds the title of assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In addition, he is a member of the University of Maryland Division of Thoracic Surgery and the Thoracic Oncology Program at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center.
His areas of special interest include esophageal cancer, gastrointestinal reflux disease lung cancer, hyperhidrosis and emphysema.
