Thoracic Surgery Division

Diagnostic and Treatment

Diagnostic and Treatment

The clinical leadership and expertise of our general thoracic surgeons, combined with a growing number of patients, have allowed us to create a divison dedicated to this specialty.

Few medical centers have the staff, expertise, and patient volume to support a separate Division of Thoracic Surgery. The clinical leadership and expertise of our general thoracic surgeons, combined with a growing number of patients, have allowed us to create a division dedicated to this specialty. Working in close collaboration with other departments, the Division offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services in the following areas.

Transplantation: Our thoracic transplantation team offers a multidisciplinary approach for evaluation of heart and lung transplant candidates. Surgeons at University of Maryland Medicine's Division of Transplantation have performed more than 55 single and double lung transplant procedures, with excellent results. They also perform combined heart and lung transplant procedures.

Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment: The Division works closely with the Greenebaum Cancer Center's Thoracic Oncology Program to diagnose and treat thoracic cancers. Patients are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team that includes a surgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and other specialists. We take pride in meeting our patientsÂ’ needs in a caring environment. Some of our services include:

Emphysema Evaluation and Treatment: To date, our emphysema program has evaluated over 750 patients and performed lung volume reduction surgery for over 125 patients. In fact, the University of Maryland has been a pioneer of this promising surgical treatment. We also offer medical therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation for emphysema.

General Thoracic Surgery: We offer surgery to treat a range of thoracic diseases and conditions, making it a priority to use minimally invasive thoracoscopic techniques whenever possible.
