University Specialty Hospital serves a unique group of patients that require some of the most complex, interdisciplinary medical care available. Located at Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the facility provides specialized care services to patients who are critically ill, have multiple complications and/or failures that require continued hospitalization beyond the acute care setting.
Our programs include ventilator care, coma emergence, traumatic brain injury, pulmonary rehabilitation and medically complex care, which are described in more detail below. University Specialty Hospital joined the University of Maryland Medical System in 1996. University Specialty Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) -- for its traumatic brain injury program -- and is licensed to care for Medicare and Medicaid patients.
University Specialty Hospital offers its patients access to inpatient rehabilitation at University of Maryland's Kernan Hospital in Baltimore City, outpatient rehabilitation and physical therapy at five sites throughout the Baltimore metropolitan area and home care services once they are discharged.
University of Maryland's Post-Acute Care Services will schedule an on-site consultation and assessment with each patient and family. They will provide medical pre-admission screening to assure appropriate admission placement. The Post-Acute Care team assists in making arrangements for transportation, a thorough evaluation upon arrival to the hospital and insurance requirements.
