Clinical activities of the Division of Vascular Surgery are conducted at the following locations:

UMMS

University of Maryland Hospital - a full-service, tertiary medical center. The parent general surgery training program graduates 5 chief residents. There are post-graduate surgical training programs in Pediatric Surgery, CT Surgery, and Transplantation. The University Hospital complex also includes the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center - the busiest trauma center in the United States. Shock Trauma is part of an integrated state-wide EMS system for rapid patient transport from our entire geographic region. Shock Trauma is also a designated spinal cord injury center for Maryland. University Hospital currently has 17 operating theaters. A new building will open in 2002 housing a new operating suite. This will include a room fitted out with the latest imaging equipment for the performance of surgical/endovascular interventions.

BWMC

Baltimore Washington Medical Center (formerly North Arundel Hospital) - a community hospital in nearby Glen Burnie, North Arundel Hospital is the most recent addition to the University of Maryland Medical System. The Maryland Vascular Center at North Arundel opened in 2003 and just like the center at the University of Maryland medical Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. Led by Dr. Marshall Benjamin and a multidisciplinary team of physicians, the center has expertise in carotid stenting and endovascular techniques. The center is also a teaching affiliate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, training physicians in the latest advancements in vascular care.

VA

Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center - a full service hospital, the BVAMC is adjacent to University Hospital and connected by a pedestrian bridge. This new VA facility first opened in 1993 and has been a pioneer in the development of the "filmless" imaging and archiving systems. The BVAMC has 6 spacious, modern operating rooms and state-of-the-art portable imaging equipment to facilitate endovascular interventions. The BVAMC has its own Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory with two full-time technologists. The Division of Vascular Surgery at UMMS has administrative responsibility for the Vascular Surgery service at BVAMC, and all staff are full-time Division of Vascular Surgery faculty.

Mercy Medical Center - a University-affiliated full-service hospital. Mercy Hospital serves as an integrated component part of both the General Surgery and Vascular Surgery residency training programs. The staff of the Mercy Vascular Center have been innovators in the applications of endovascular interventions, and Mercy is equipped with a dedicated endovascular OR suite.
