Rajabrata Sarkar, M.D., Ph.D.
Professor of Surgery, Division Head and Chief of Vascular Surgery
Dr. Sarkar is an expert in treating blood vessel disorders and a nationally known researcher in blood vessel growth and development. Dr. Sarkar comes from the University of California, San Francisco, where he was an associate professor of surgery and a vascular surgeon since 1999. He received his medical degree and a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his surgical training at UCLA and was trained in vascular surgery at the University of Michigan. For more information on Dr. Sarkar, see the news release.
Brajesh K. Lal, M.D.
Associate Professor of Surgery, Director of Endovascular Surgery
Prior to coming to the University of Maryland, Dr. Lal was on faculty at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS). After completing medical school at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India, Dr. Lal spent two years in the Fogarty Research Fellowship program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. After his fellowship at NIH, he completed his surgical residency and vascular surgical fellowship at the UMDNJ-NJMS.
Dr. Lal’s clinical and research interests include carotid stenosis and lower extremity arterial occlusive disease. Currently, he is the director of operations and co-investigator on the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy Versus Stenting Trial (CREST), which compares the risks and benefits of the two major procedures for opening blocked neck arteries to restore blood flow to the brain. In addition, he serves on the Executive Committee of the American Venous Forum and as Chairman of the American Venous Registry.
Robert Stuart Crawford, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Dr. Crawford is a native of Guayaquil, Ecuador. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He was chief general surgery resident at Wayne State University. He completed research, surgical critical care and vascular surgery fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Dr. Crawford is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical and board eligible in vascular surgery. He is the author of over 30 publications and book chapters and has been invited to speak at a variety of national and international conferences.
Kapil
Gopal, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Dr. Gopal is an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a practicing vascular surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He received his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine and completed his surgical training at Temple University Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Gopal was given a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (T-32) to complete a two year postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. He, then, completed his vascular surgery training at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Thomas S.
Monahan, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Dr. Monahan is an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine
and a practicing vascular surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He received his
medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed a general
surgery residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Monahan has also completed
a fellowship in vascular surgery at the University of California, San Francisco and is
board certified in general surgery.
Michael
P. Lilly, M.D.
Professor of Surgery
Dr. Lilly completed his Vascular Surgery training at Northwestern University
in Chicago. He has been a faculty member of the University of Maryland since
1989. Dr. Lilly has developed the basic science research program in our Division.
He is Medical Director of the Vascular Laboratory at the Baltimore VA Medical
Center.
Marshall
E. Benjamin, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Dr. Benjamin completed his Vascular Surgery training at the Bowman Gray School
of Medicine of Wake Forest University. Dr. Benjamin has expanded the program
experience with renal artery revascularization and endovascular grafting for
aortic aneurysms at our institution. Dr. Benjamin is an RVT and serves as Medical
Director of the Vascular Laboratory at the University of Maryland Hospital.
