In fact, almost every disease has a genetic basis, including cancer, heart disease and diabetes. In this interview, Ellen Beth Levitt speaks with an expert in genetics about a variety of health problems that are inherited or are caused by a genetic mutation and why it's important to screen newborns for certain genetic diseases.

Dr. Mimi Blitzer, a specialist in medical genetics at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Blitzer is also chief of the division of human genetics, as well as a professor of pediatrics and OB/GYN at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
