At the University of Maryland Center for Weight Management & Wellness, we are committed to ensuring that patients receive the tools they need to achieve and maintain weight loss. Diet, exercise, and behavior are emphasized as crucial components in weight control.

Studies have shown that surgical and medical treatments are effective means for achieving initial weight loss. Long-term weight loss is accomplished when patients make a lifelong commitment that includes dietary changes and exercise. By embarking on a healthy lifestyle, individuals who once struggled with obesity can also reduce or eliminate conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and cholesterol that have been implicated in heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.

All of our weight loss surgery patients will now have a tailor-made space on the new Surgical Acute Care Unit at the University of Maryland Medical Center. The new, larger rooms are specifically designed for the comfort and safety of bariatric surgery patients. For more information about the rooms, read this article.

Those who wish to be considered by the Center for Weight Management & Wellness as candidates for weight loss surgery must attend a free informational seminar.

The weight loss surgery seminar, which includes a visual presentation, is designed to assist participants in making informed decisions about whether or not surgery is the right option. Those attending a seminar will learn detailed information about bariatric surgery, including why the Roux-en-Y or gastric bypass is the most common procedure for obesity.
