Mark D. Kligman, M.D.

Mark D. Kligman, M.D.

Dr. Mark Kligman, an expert in minimally invasive gastric bypass surgery, is Director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness at the University of Maryland Medical Center. In the past five years, he has performed more than 450 laparoscopic Roux-en-Y operations with an outstanding rate of success.

A trained trauma surgeon, Dr. Kligman developed an interest in bariatric surgery while at the Medical College of Ohio, where he served as Division Chief of Trauma/Critical Care/Emergency Services and Medical Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Eventually, he decided to devote the majority of his practice to weight loss surgery.

He received his medical degree from Wayne State University. In addition to a residency and research fellowship at the University of Maryland, he completed fellowships in trauma surgery and surgical critical care at the University of Miami. He has written many articles and given numerous presentations on laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery.


Emanuele Lo Menzo, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S.

Emanuele Lo Menzo, M.D.

Emanuele Lo Menzo is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Most recently, Dr. Lo Menzo was an assistant professor of laparoendoscopic surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

A graduate of the University of Catania in Italy, Dr. Lo Menzo continued his training as general surgery resident at the Jefferson Health System, at the Lankenau Hospital in Pennsylvania. He also completed a research fellowship in advanced laparoscopy, endoscopy and bariatric surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Florida.

Dr.  Lomenzo's special interests include laparoscopic surgery for morbid obesity, foregut surgery, as well as hernia surgery.


Ronald P. Silverman, M.D.

Ronald P. Silverman, M.D. Dr. Silverman is an associate professor of surgery in the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of the division of plastic surgery. Dr. Silverman has experience in facial and nasal reconstruction, skin cancer resection, burn reconstruction, complex wound management, general reconstructive surgery, as well as facial and breast cosmetic surgery. He maintains a clinical and research interest in skin cancer resection and facial/nasal reconstruction and is currently involved in research projects focused on tissue engineering for reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Silverman is also a member of the Kernan Hospital Cleft Lip and Palate team. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he was awarded the Wayne W. Babock prize for outstanding performance in surgery, Dr. Silverman completed his plastic surgery residency at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital, where he gained an extensive experience in both cosmetic as well as reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Silverman is an expert in minimally invasive cosmetic surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, and breast and body contouring.


Steven M. Scharf, M.D. Ph.D.

Steven M. Scharf, M.D. Ph.D.

Dr. Scharf is the medical director of the University of Maryland Sleep Disorders Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and sleep medicine and is a professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is responsible for the overall management of the Center, the sleep laboratory and the clinical policies. He is a nationally recognized expert in breathing problems at night.
