The surgical weight loss program at the UM Center for Weight Management & Wellness is led by bariatric surgeon Dr. Mark Kligman, who has performed more than 450 bariatric procedures with outstanding weight loss achieved and few complications. In fact, weight loss can average 80 percent of excess body weight one year after surgery. (See patient success stories.)
Dr. Kligman specializes in the minimally invasive Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, which according to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the National Institutes of Health is the most frequently performed weight loss surgery.
This procedure offers many advantages as compared to more traditional "open" gastric bypass surgery. These advantages include smaller incisions, quicker recovery time, shorter hospital stays and reduced risk of infection and complications.
In addition, all of our weight loss surgery patients will now have a tailor-made space on the new Surgical Acute Care Unit at the University of Maryland Medical Center. The new, larger rooms are specifically designed for the comfort and safety of bariatric surgery patients. For more information about the rooms, click here.
To help patients make the diet and lifestyle changes necessary to keep the weight off long term, the Center offers a bariatric support group. These sessions have been shown to directly increase the chances of short- and long-term patient success following bariatric surgery.
Those who wish to be considered as candidates for weight loss surgery must attend a free informational seminar. This seminar includes a visual presentation and is designed to assist participants in making informed decisions about whether or not surgery is the right option.
