Echocardiogram
Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to produce an image of the heart's structure and function. It will evaluate how strong the heart is pumping, and will also be looking at the function of your heart valves. The test takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
How the test is performed:
- You will be asked to lie on the exam table while a few electrodes are attached to your chest and shoulders. This helps to monitor your EKG while the sonogram is being performed.
- A colorless gel is then applied to the chest and the echo transducer is placed on top of it.
- The sonographer then makes recordings from different areas of the chest and is able to see multiple views of the heart.
- You may be asked to move to your back or side, or to breathe slowly or take deep breaths to obtain the best possible images.
- Once the test has been completed, it will be read by one of our board certified physicians. The results will then be forwarded to your ordering physician.
How to prepare for the test:
- Wear two-piece clothing.
- Avoid using lotions or oils the day of the study.
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to help with the check-in process at the front desk.
