Parkinson's Disease Symposium
The 2023 UMD Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center's annual symposium is specifically for people living with Parkinson's, care partners, and others interested in movement disorders. This year's program will explore the benefits of using technology to navigate managing your health.
Our keynote speaker, Dr. Robert Cochrane, whose father has lived with PD for over 20 years, is CEO and found of Yes, And...Exercise (YAX)!, a non-profit whose mission is to use improvisation as a tool to improve the quality of life of people living with Parkinson's Disease (PD).
The Within Our Reach symposium will also offer opportunities for you to participate in movement activities, engage in interactive improvisation games, learn about the benefits of using technology to manage your health and new PD therapies.
Please note that tickets are $35/person. Payment will be collected at the event. Please bring cash or check.

Keynote Speaker: Robert Cochrane, PhD
Dr. Cochrane has developed a novel approach to handling challenges related to PD...improvisation. For this year's symposium, Robert will speak about his program, Day One: the Parkinson's Prison and the Hero's Journey to Escape.
This is a dynamic writing program to help people with and affiliated with PD.
Dr. Cochrane researched the effects of improvisation and storytelling on Parkinson's disease (PD) in the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
He has founded the nonprofit, Yes, And...eXercise, to proliferate two programs he created for the PD community:
- Jam for Joy, an improvisation-based support group
- Day One: the Parkinson's Prison and the Hero's Journey to Escape
He is also an accomplished filmmaker, including directing and producing the award-winning PD-themed Boys of Summer documentary series, which played at the World Parkinson's Congress in Barcelona, in July 2023, and two Stephen King-based short films. He lives in Walnut Creek, CA, with his beautiful wife, two crazy kids and an old, cranky cockapoo.
