Her clinical focus is leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes, and her research interests include understanding drug resistance in leukemia cells and the development of strategies for overcoming or bypassing mechanisms of resistance. Her overall goal is to improve the outcome of treatment for leukemia patients.

His research interests include the investigation of cellular pathways that speed cell growth in esophageal cancer. In addition to his expertise in lung and esophageal surgery, Dr. Battafarano specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as video-assisted lobectomy. He also performs sympathectomy, a surgical treatment for excessive sweating known as hyperhidrosis.

His honors include a special achievement award from the National Cancer Institute. He was named one of Washington’s best physicians by Washingtonian magazine. He has been the director of the Greenebaum Cancer Center since 2004.
