Having a baby is one of life's most thrilling experiences. At University of Maryland Medical Center, we want to make that experience as healthy and happy as possible for you and your family.
Finding the Right Caregiver
If you have not selected a caregiver, we can help you find an excellent obstetrician, gynecologist, certified nurse midwife or pediatrician whose office location, hours and insurance plans match your needs. Preparing for the Baby
When You Arrive
Pre-registration enables you to go directly to the labor and delivery area when you arrive at the hospital to deliver your baby. Valet parking is free for mothers in labor and handicapped visitors.
When the Baby Arrives
Our modern and attractive labor and delivery suites are staffed by obstetric anesthesiologists 24 hours a day. You have several choices for anesthesia-assisted birth as well as the option of delivering without anesthesia.
You also have the option of giving birth in a private labor/postpartum suite, a home-like atmosphere, where you can stay from the time you begin labor until you and baby are ready to leave the hospital. Following the birth, you and your baby can rest comfortably in your room. If you need time to yourself for showering and sleeping, the baby can stay in a nearby nursery. If you prefer, another adult may stay overnight as well. Our staff members will help you and your family learn to care for your newborn and answer any of your questions.
Once your newborn arrives, lactation specialists can help you and the baby learn to feed successfully. Don't worry about breastfeeding problems that might arise after you leave the hospital. Our lactation specialists are available to answer any questions. If you prefer bottle-feeding, help with formulas and feeding schedules is available.
When it is time to leave the hospital and take your baby home, our staff will ensure you are well prepared. Throughout your stay, we review many aspects of baby care. You also will receive a videotape on baby care that you can watch at home.
Visiting Hours
Generally, visiting hours are 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. You can limit the number of visitors if you choose. Visitors can park at a discounted rate in the Grand Garage on Paca Street, just minutes from the hospital.
If A Problem Occurs
While most pregnancies and births go smoothly, sometimes medical difficulties occur. If you or your baby has a problem, nationally known experts in high-risk pregnancy and neonatology from our Center for Advanced Fetal Care are available 24 hours a day. If your baby comes early, our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is Maryland's largest and provides the most advanced care available. Our commitment to family-centered care is also reflected in the NICU, where families participate in their baby's care as much as possible.
