Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Health

Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program

Research

Facilities

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences maintains its basic research facilities on the 11th floor of the Bressler Building. This facility consists of approximately 15,000 square feet of wet laboratory space and is linked to the main hospital by corridors. The space is shared by the basic scientists already noted. The equipment contained therein is state of the art and allows for a full range of studies ranging from sophisticated molecular biology to whole animal instrumentation.

Research Time

This fellowship program was created on the principle of block time. There are 18 months dedicated to didactics and research. It is expected that this volume of research time will allow all fellows to design and conduct research of sufficient quality to assure completion of the thesis prior to graduation from the fellowship. When assigned to the core MFM clinical service, the Fellow will be scheduled for clinical activities at least 8 half-days per week. The remainder of the time, clinical activity permitting, may be spent in the laboratory. All fellows participate in a one week Introduction to Clinical Research at UMB course given under the direction of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive medicine. As noted above in order to provide a better foundation as well as an earlier start for research, the first year of our program has been redesigned. The initial four months provide an introduction to ultrasound, and genetics as previously described. The final month of is devoted to an introduction to basic science research under the direction of Loren Thompson PhD. at the beginning of the first research block in the first year

When assigned to a research month the Fellows’ research shall be interrupted only by didactic sessions and attending the resident High Risk Clinic (one-half day each per week). These clinical activities total six hours/week, well within the 10% time limit allowed. Night call remains constant throughout the Fellowship as described above.

Occasional cross coverage for critical clinical activities may be required of one Fellow for another’s vacation or attendance at scientific or didactic meetings. This is reciprocated in kind to protect total research time.

Library, Literature Search Programs, Databases, Medical Records

Members of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Maryland are linked together by a Hospital Intranet with full access to the Internet. The fellows have access to several interactive or archival databases. We have completed the process of transitioning our complete obstetric record from an old and now obsolete text based “ProTouch” system to a new Windows NT based system wide computerized medical record which cross populates directly into our perinatal database. The Fellows have access to queriable periodic downloads from this archival database, and after IRB approval can obtain specific queries as well. All neonatal data is likewise maintained on an archival database. Interactive databases include a perinatal genetics database, an obstetric outcome database, and the database for the Center for Advanced Fetal Care.

These databases are linked by a universal medical record number, and social security number and patient birth-date. They are all compatible with commercial relational databases and spreadsheets, which are made available to the Fellows on their individual (supplied by the department) PCs. Data stored on the network servers are automatically backed up on a daily basis.

Assistance in query design, database construction, and data analysis is provided by MFM faculty (Drs. Ahmet Baschat MB BCh and his Post Doctoral Research Assistant Dr. Ozhan Turan M.D., Ph.D) and members of the Department and Information Technology Team. Further assistance is available from the extensive information management and computer resources available within the University.

The Fellows also have access to several research databases maintained by members of the faculty including fetal transfusions, and fetal blood samplings, and pregnancies complicated by fetal viral infections, severe IUGR and Fetal Doppler. The fellows also maintain and have access to databases initiated by previous fellows’ research in GDM, PPROM, and Trauma. These databases are compatible with the Fellows’ retrieval and analysis software and can be used by the Fellows to research relevant topics. Finally, the Fellows have on-line access to all medical records after approval by the Committee for Human Investigation should they wish to conduct clinical research.

From their offices, Fellows have access to the internet, the University intranet, and The University of Maryland Health Sciences Library. The University of Maryland School of Medicine Library is located across the street from the UMMS. The Library is the second largest medical school library on the East Coast and serves as the Regional Medical Library for the Southeastern Atlantic Region in the National Library of Medicine’s National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The University Library allows access to 93 on-line databases and over 2800 online journals and textbooks, including, AIDSLINE, BioethicsLine, CancerLit, Cochrane Library, Current Contents Connect (CCC), ETOH (Alcohol and Alcohol Problems Science Database), Journal Citation Reports, MD Consult, MEDLINE , Micromedex, PubMed, PsycINFO, Science Citation Index Expanded, TOXNET (Toxicology Data Network). A state of the art teleconference center is also located within the departmental library.

Specific consultation on statistical issues, study design, and analysis is available through the UMB School of Epidemiology. Assistance with and further training in research and study design, and implementation are available through the UM SOM Office for Research Subjects and The Dean’s Office.

Selection of special mentor

The selection of a research mentor for each Fellow is the responsibility of the Program Director. This selection takes place within the first three to sixth months of the Fellowship and is subject to the approval of the fellow. The research mentor is responsible for ensuring the progress of each Fellow's research project(s).
