Definición

Es una infección e inflamación del revestimiento de una o más válvulas cardíacas, en la que no se puede identificar ningún microorganismo causante de endocarditis en un hemocultivo. Esto se debe a que ciertos microorganismos no proliferan bien en ambientes de laboratorio o a que algunos pacientes han recibido previamente antibióticos que impiden su crecimiento.

La endocarditis normalmente es el resultado de una infección de la sangre. Las bacterias pueden entrar en el torrente sanguíneo durante ciertos procedimientos médicos, incluso dentales. Las bacterias pueden viajar hasta el corazón, donde pueden establecerse en las válvulas cardíacas dañadas.
