Laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery has become the mainstream in operating rooms across the United States. The field of gynecologic surgery is clearly not an exception, as minimally invasive gynecology has gained enormous momentum within the specialty.

Advances in computer technology and laparoscopic instruments have allowed us to offer a minimally invasive approach to a much broader range of patients. The field of gynecologic surgery is proudly included in this medical and surgical marvel.

As of today, many procedures can be successfully done by a minimally invasive approach in most patients including:

  • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
  • Oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries)
  • Myomectomy (removal of the fibroids)
  • Treatment of endometriosis and pelvic pain
  • Radiation Oncology

Treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding and hysteroscopy (the visualization of the inside of the uterus), myomectomy (removal of uterine myomas), cervical stenosis, and sacrocolpopexy (treatment of the prolapse of the vagina) and treatment of pelvic pain are among common procedures done using a minimally invasive approach.

In July 2014, the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) was designated as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the AAGL and Surgical Review Corporation. As advocates for the advancement of minimally invasive surgery worldwide, COEMIG provides an independent third party assessment to recognize centers that provide the highest quality of care for many of the procedures and conditions outlined above. This designation recognizes the achievements of the physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team within Minimally Invasive Gynecology who work to maintain the highest standards of care, leading to better patient outcomes.

Minimally invasive procedures offered through a COEMIG center must adhere to strict guidelines to receive this designation. While the surgeries and technology are very complex in scope, they routinely lead to better patient outcomes and shorter recovery times – and are often times offered as same-day procedures. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, UMMC’s nationally-recognized experts rigorously review and analyze outcomes data to continuously raise the bar on quality metrics and patient safety. COEMIG centers constantly strive to improve care standards both at home and globally.
