Application Instructions

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) delivers comprehensive health care services through a network of 13 affiliated hospitals. MRI fellows provide clinical care for several UMMS hospitals, associated imaging centers and the Baltimore VA Medical Center. MRI fellowship training is based at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), the flagship academic medical center of UMMS. UMMC is located in downtown Baltimore on the campus of the University of Maryland Baltimore, a short walking distance from Baltimore's historic Inner Harbor and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. MRI fellows at UMMC receive a well-rounded education, with exposure to several nationally renowned centers of medical excellence.

The MRI fellowship is an intensive, 12-month clinical fellowship with a primary focus on musculoskeletal radiology, neuroradiology and abdominal radiology. Exposure to other types of subspecialty MR imaging is possible through an elective rotation.

The fellowship is designed to provide MRI fellows with additional experience in clinical MR imaging beyond their residency training in preparation for private practice, academic radiology or federal service (VA medical centers, etc.). MRI fellows receive an outstanding educational experience from a diverse set of top-notched faculty members who are accomplished on the regional and national level. The goal of the fellowship is to provide advanced training in clinical MRI (3.0T and 1.5T).

MRI fellows will observe daily scanning activities, discuss clinical indications for MR examinations, review pulse sequences used to address common clinical problems, and discuss the principles of MR imaging with experienced mentors and colleagues. Our department also features PET/MRI and MRI-guided High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU).

In addition, MRI fellows will participate in a didactic physics program geared to enhance their understanding of the pearls and pitfalls of how the clinical practice of MRI is performed. This additional training enhances MRI fellows' ability to communicate with MR technologists and to help resolve MRI artifacts when they occur. In addition, faculty and visiting professors frequently provide a wide spectrum of hot-topic MRI conferences.

Optional research activities are available with clinical faculty and/or research faculty. Several MRI research centers are available at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), including the Core for Translational Imaging at Maryland (CTRIM) and the UMSOM Center for Advanced Imaging Research (CAIR). Our facilities support cutting edge research for hyperpolarized imaging, small animal imaging (7.0T and 9.4T), and small animal MR-guided focused ultrasound, among others.
