- Highly skilled physicians and surgeons: We perform transplants for complex cases, including those that other centers have turned away. We performed the first single-incision living organ donation for kidney transplant. We offer living donor liver transplant, and we have one of the few MARS (Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System) liver dialysis units in the country to support the sickest liver patients. - Specialized ICU: We can accept patients immediately in the Critical Care Resuscitation Unit at UMMC in Baltimore. We have expertise in triage, transfer and management of the sickest patients in the region within the dedicated R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
- Aggressive tumor treatments: For patients who have cancer that requires transplant, our interventional radiology and oncology teams work to shrink the tumor and permit successful transplant outcomes.

- Telemedicine consultation: Patients and referring physicians can talk to our liver transplant team instantly via a HIPAA-compliant website. We can see patients in ICUs around the state or around the country through the e-ICU platform, which allows immediate consults for patients with disease without having to travel.

We offer a transplant evaluation process catered to patients’ situations and schedules and the needs of referring physicians.
Here is how our evaluation works:
- Many patients can complete most of the evaluation process in one short day at our Baltimore hospital.
- Out-of-town patients may be able to complete most evaluation testing in their home community.
- Our regional clinics on the Eastern Shore make it possible for patients in those areas to meet with our physicians without traveling to Baltimore.
- UMMC transplant physicians offer secure e-visits for liver transplant patients.
We are your partners in your patients’ care. We provide you with updates on your patients’ progress at every step of the transplant experience, from the pre-transplant workup and listing through the transplant itself and post-transplant follow-up.
Within a few months after transplant, we generally transfer patient care back to the home physician. This is especially true if you are comfortable with the patient's post-transplant issues and medications.
Prior to transplant, we also are pleased to receive workup studies from the patient's local physician and your referral network. Our evaluation is flexible to accommodate patients' needs.
